![]() Why is sonography referred to as ultrasound? ![]() Without sound waves this technology could not exist. Making an ultrasound image is complicated by many factors, but it’s easy to see why we call a sonogram a sonogram. The empty room is going to return stronger echoes compared to the pillow. hyperechoic (bone)Ī really great way to think of this is if you sang a song in a small, empty room versus singing a song with a pillow three inches from your face. If no echos are returned, this is represented as black (anechoic).ġ. Others return less strong and are represented in varying shades of gray (hypoechoic). Some return with very strong signals and are represented as bright or white (hyperechoic). When the sound waves (echos) return, they are not all the same. In an ultrasound image, “farther” is the bottom of the image and “closer” is the top of the image. Therefore, its echo will be represented as being further away in the image. The longer the echo takes to return, the farther away it went. Then, based on the time that it takes for the sound to travel, hit, and return, the computer places the echo at the correct depth in the picture. The same transducer that sends the sound out into the body also collects the echo when it returns. When the sound leaves the transducer and enters the body, it travels until it hits something and makes the return trip back (an echo). Since sound travels through different mediums at different speeds, the ultrasound machine is set to know the speed at which sound travels through soft tissue. The crystals vibrate sending sound waves into the body. Inside the transducer there are crystals. Sonographers place a tool called a transducer (or probe) against or inside a patient’s body. Loosely translated sonogram means sound recording.Ĭonsidering ultrasounds are inaudible to the human ear, most of us don’t even realize that sound is involved in creating a picture.
